I'm a chef at home. When I lived with my parents, I didn't do much cooking. The most I did was making a turkey sandwich for lunch, or cooking a simple pasta dish for dinner for my sister and I when my parents went out. In fact, I didn't really have to enter the kitchen, because my mom would be spending most of her time there. Kitchen was my mom's space, not mine. There was always plenty of food my mom had made in our kitchen. My mom loves cooking. She is also an amazing chef, she can easily make any dish that I request - dwen-jang-ji-gae (my favourite Korean soup!), chicken teriyaki with her signature home-made sauce and souvlaki served with home-made tzatziki sauce. I never worried about what to cook for dinner when I was living with my parents.
I have an opportunity to live alone for a few months. It was then that I realized that I've found myself a new hobby. I figured that I wasn't that bad at cooking after trying to make some simple dishes for myself (let me emphasize the word 'simple'). Ever since I got a full time job, I spent less time in my kitchen. I was tired and hungry by the time I arrived home after an hour of commuting during the rush hour. The thought of what to make for dinner was a stress for me. When I came home, I tried to cook as soon as I can so that I could quickly fill up my starving stomach. After dinner, I prepared next day's lunch. So cooking wasn't that much fun. It was more of a necessity. During this time, it made me wonder how my mom and all the other moms do it, every day, three times a day - brainstorming what to cook, prepping, cooking and cleaning.
For me, cooking is fun when I have ideas and time. And of course, when I'm in the mood for it. Can I still call it a hobby of mine? Yes, hobbies are for your spare time, right? So I'm thankful for my recently discovered hobby - cooking. I especially enjoy the part when the outcome is nice and I can share the meal with people I love. It's so rewarding to see my loved ones enjoy the food I made. I think it's one of my happiest moments in life. I can't wait to have my own place, decorate my house all pretty and have my family and friends over. I'll prepare a nice meal for them, I'll surely love that! I think I get this from my mom. She loves cooking, she enjoys inviting family and friends over, and I'm sure she finds it rewarding too! Although I'm not a great chef (yet), I am thankful that I enjoy cooking for others!
